STAYING HEALTHY
AS
YOU MANAGE
YOUR SYMPTOMS

Along with taking your medication, following a healthy lifestyle can help you manage your symptoms and live with schizophrenia.

Healthy habits to make your own

Follow your treatment plan

You and your healthcare provider have put together a treatment plan that is designed to help you manage your symptoms. If you’re ever feeling unhappy about how things are going, talk with your healthcare provider before you skip or miss a treatment appointment.

Stress less

Stress can take a toll on your health and make living with schizophrenia more difficult. So, it is important to learn how to manage your stress every day. If you’re feeling a lot of stress, talk with someone on your support team.

Get your ZZZs

It's common for people with schizophrenia to have trouble sleeping, which can have a negative impact on their health. If you have a problem sleeping, ask your healthcare provider about ways to help you get more sleep.

Talk with your Treatment Team

It is important to keep the lines of communication open with your healthcare providers. You can tell them how you are feeling, discuss your goals with them, and ask them questions about your treatment.

Avoid alcohol

Alcohol and other substances can interfere with medications that treat the symptoms of schizophrenia. If you are taking schizophrenia medication, you should avoid alcohol and tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take or plan to take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Stay connected to others

Involving your family and friends in your treatment plan can be a big help as you continue to manage your symptoms. You may also want to consider joining a schizophrenia support group or other helpful community organizations. If you find reaching out for help or being with others challenging, ask a member of your Treatment Team, such as a counselor or therapist, to help you.
